stem cell network NRW

For many years, the Stem Cell Network NRW has brought together the diverse stem cell research activities in North Rhine-Westphalia, linking scientific, clinical and ethical-legal perspectives. Its beginnings dates back to 2002, when the Competence Network for Stem Cell Research NRW was founded. The aim of this state-wide network was to strengthen research in the field of stem cell biology, promote young scientists and systematically expand the social dialogue on issues relating to stem cell research. Over more than a decade and a half, it established itself as a central structure for networking, exchange and orientation in the state.

In 2018, this competence network was further developed into the Stem Cell Network.NRW as a scientific association, supported by numerous universities and research institutions. In the following years, the network provided important impetus: it promoted the transfer of knowledge towards clinical application, supported young researchers through workshops, scholarships and qualification programmes, and provided comprehensive information to the public, politicians and the media.
Its established event formats were also characteristic. International scientific conferences – in particular the regularly held International Meeting – brought together leading researchers from Germany and abroad. This was complemented by internal retreats, which enabled strategic exchange between the participating institutions, and the ELSA symposia, which were organised by young researchers and dedicated to the ethical, legal and social dimensions of stem cell research.

The funding of the StemCellNetwork.NRW by the Minstriy of Culture and Science oft he State of North-Rhine Westphalia was was terminated by 31 December 2025. This marks the end of a structure that has been unique in Germany for more than two decades and has significantly shaped and raised the profile of stem cell research in the state.
